7th Nemesis: Violentia imperatrix mundi

I intended ending this review by recommending everyone a visit to 7th Nemesis’ (lackluster) homepage for a chance to grab this here demo all for free. Doing it legal for once, now wouldn’t that be a treat? Forget it cheapskate, ‘cause these fuckos have gotten themselves a deal with Restraint records and are in the process of re-recording “Violentia imperatrix mundi”, thus removing any trace of downloadable material from their (infected cunt of a) homepage. Except, “VIN” is not the name it will be released under. When it hits the stores (all 5 of them) it’ll go under the name “Archetype of natural disaster,” and my gut feeling tells me the label had a saying in this, ‘cause “VIN” sure goes as fluent off the tongue as contracting A.I.D.S on death row.
7th Nemesis’ will most likely rings as many bells among you as there are ding-dongs to be heard in Mecca. Let me therefore educate you ever so slightly. They hail from Paris, France, and came together intent on combining extreme metal with the complexity of progressive rock. Hardly an original idea, but I’m more than happy to digest as long as the rock bit isn’t the predominant part. Let me put it this way: “VIN” is a metal “album” through and through. Fuck you.
“VIN” being a demo of course means it’s a bit rough at the edges, leaving something to be desired so to say. And my main gripe is with the production and its balance. The different instruments (vocals included) sometimes mute out the details of one and other, in addition the guitars could do well with a heavier distortion and an effort should be put into drums. Expertly played they are, but Mr. Skinbasher shouldn’t be on the top of the music, I’d much rather hear him in it. Then again, all in all it sounds fucktons and a spermload better than many, many a professionally released album. And, I hadn’t been this much of a nitpicking cunt if it wasn’t to be re-recorded, and therefore my seemingly grumpy complaints aren’t that. More like advices or even wishes if you like.
My extended advices to the perverted frog-eaters would be adding more solos and make the contrasts starker. There is nothing wrong with the core of their music, which could very well be described as melodic Death metal, but they should spend some more time on the progressive bits. Not that they are bad, just don’t sound like they’ve done the most of it, as if they are hesitant, maybe afraid being labeled as pretentious twats. Well, they are whalecock and a mile from sounding up their own asses, so there is room for a chance or two still. Not to forget the solos. As a matter of fact I’m a bit surprised there aren’t more of them already, as a couple of ripping solos would definitively liven up an already quality release.
If you fancy the idea of a slightly experimental Carcass circa “Heartwork,” this French combo might suit your taste like gay meat to Dahmer.
